Being good at being hopeless brought Charlie Chaplin a great deal of success. It also gave us 8 years of W. Bill Clinton also qualifies in some respects. I guess there's some hope for the hopeless. Nature abhors a vacuum, even if its cranial.

Medusa has some talented writers

Two of the Punk Anthology contributors have won awards recently.

Poet Tony Walsh's poem and video, I can Write a Rainbow, has won the Viral Verse Film Fest.

And the documentary about the band Heavy Load (also in the punk anthology) has won numerous awards, including most recently the Britdoc Audience Award.

The truth about creativity

A brilliant talk by John Cleese. I've loaded the best part, which is the perfect explanation for the question "Doesn't he (or she) know how bad that writing is?". The full talk is after.

"To know how good you are at something requires the same skills as it does to be good at that thing. Which means that if you're absolutely hopeless at something, you lack exactly the skills that you need to know that you're absolutely hopeless at it."

You've been Delled -- and you didn't even get kissed

Last July, I got hired at the very last minute -- 13 days before opening -- to light a show. My laptop computer was dying (rather dramatically so); there was no way it would make it through another show. At the time, I was in rural Vermont; there was obviously no time for mail-order and the closest thing to a computer store was Staples...and the only laptop they had that I could afford was a Dell.

I was hesitant to buy Dell. I'd had one 5 years before and the experience was not good -- as soon… Continue

Nanowrimo one year on

I just want to put in a word of encouragement to those who are struggling to keep up with the daily word count requirements during National Novel Writing Month. Let me share an accomplishment that took me a year, but that got a good head start during last year's Nano event.
I started writing my first attempt at a novel last November, and managed to get about 25,000 words done in the month. That wasn't enough to be a Nano Winner, but it was, nevertheless, a big win for me. I had made a transition… Continue

The Sea Call Farm Greenhouse

The old Sea Call Farm property in Orleans, Mass. was acquired by the town and is now home to the community garden where residents keep small garden plots. The original greenhouse was in disrepair and considered a liability because of the broken glass and lead paint, so it was demolished. I was commissioned to recreate this structure as closely as possible to the original. Low-tech, simple, and elegant in design, this very functional structure is a most satisfying project.

The rough frame.… Continue
